Solar Terms and BaZi Year Boundaries

BaZi year and month pillars are tied to solar terms, not the civil calendar. The year commonly changes at Lichun, when the Sun reaches 315 degrees of apparent ecliptic longitude under BaziRoute’s current rule profile. The month changes at one of twelve jie boundaries.

01

The Sun supplies the boundary

A solar term is an instant associated with the Sun reaching a specified apparent longitude. Lichun is 315 degrees; the other terms continue in 15-degree steps. The UTC instant is then expressed in the relevant local time zone.

This means the calendar date printed beside a solar term can depend on location. A boundary that falls near local midnight may use a different local date in two time zones even though it is one astronomical instant.

02

Year, month and the civil calendar

January 1 is the start of the Gregorian civil year. Lunar New Year is the start of the common lunar calendar year. Neither date defines the BaZi Year Pillar used by this rule profile.

The month pillar changes at jie rather than at every civil month start. A birth close to one of these instants can receive a different Month Pillar, and sometimes a different Year Pillar, after a small correction.

03

Why calculators can disagree

Implementations may use different ephemerides, local-time resolution, time-zone data or boundary interpretations. They may also round solar-term times differently. A difference of seconds is usually harmless far from a boundary but meaningful at the exact transition.

BaziRoute records the solar-term dependency, rule profile and time assumptions with the chart. The current engine is still a prototype: day-anchor review and independent expert validation remain launch gates.

04

What to check near a boundary

Confirm the birth date and clock time, the birthplace and the historical UTC offset. Use a sourced override if the local record is unusually precise or the IANA record is uncertain. Review the warning shown with the result.

Do not resolve a boundary discrepancy by asking an AI model which chart “feels right.” The layer that determines the chart must be the deterministic calendar engine.
