How to Read a BaZi Chart

Read a BaZi chart in layers. First confirm the input and calculated Four Pillars, then identify the Day Master, map the visible and hidden stem relationships, and only then add interpretation from a named tradition. This sequence prevents symbolic commentary from quietly changing the chart facts.

1. Confirm the input and rule profile

Check the birth date, local time, birthplace, time-zone handling and true-solar-time setting. A chart near an hour, day, month or year boundary can change when the calculation method changes.

Record the engine, data versions and Rule Profile. If the time is unknown, keep the Hour Pillar absent and carry that uncertainty into every later conclusion.

2. Read the Four Pillars and Day Master

List the Year, Month, Day and Hour pillars. Identify the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar as the Day Master and note its element and yin-yang polarity.

The Day Master is the reference point for Ten Gods and element relationships. It is not a complete personality description and does not establish chart strength by itself.

03

3. Map stems, branches and hidden stems

Map the other visible stems to the Ten Gods through their relationship to the Day Master. Inspect the branches for their own elements, hidden stems and fixed interactions such as six harmony or six clash.

Keep visible element counts separate from strength, usefulness and favorable-element judgments. Counts can describe what is visible; they cannot prove balance or a useful god.

4. Add interpretation last

Interpret patterns only after the structural facts are fixed. Use a named tradition and explain whether a statement is textual symbolism, editorial guidance or an AI-generated reflection.

Avoid predictions of exact events, medical diagnoses, financial recommendations or claims of certainty. A better reading turns symbolism into questions that can be compared with real experience.

Apply the concept

Calculate your own Four Pillars.

Start with the chart facts, then read the interpretation with the method in view.
